Punakha Dzong

The Dzong is loacted at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers in the Punakha – Wangdue valley. Punakha or Pungthang Dechen Phodrang Dzong (Palace of Great Happiness) is one of the most beautiful Dzongs in the country and was the former Capital Of Bhutan untill 1955 before being shifted to Thimphu . The Dzong is now the summer Residence of the Central Monastic Body . This is the second oldest and largest Dzong built by Ngawang Namgyel and one of its most majestic structures.
